The Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program was created in 1983 to supplement the work of local social service organizations within the United States, both private and governmental, to help people in need of emergency assistance. This collaborative effort between the private and public sectors has provided over $3.3 billion in Federal funds during its 26-year history.

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 Funding

On Thursday, April 9, 2009, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced funding available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) for the Emergency Food and Shelter National Board Program (EFSP). The EFSP National Board has awarded funds made available through ARRA to qualifying jurisdictions through their EFSP Local Board and to State Set-Aside Committees. The funds awarded through ARRA have been made available to respond to increases in need for emergency services being seen by emergency services provider agencies. Award materials were mailed to Local Boards and State Set-Aside Committees on April 24, 2009, including instructions and deadlines. (Information on specific awards may be found under the Award links below.)

Phase 27 Funding Announced

On December 19, 2008, the National Board awarded funds to qualifying jurisdictions and State Set-Aside Committees. Congress appropriated $200 million for use in Phase 27 to supplement local service providers.

Phase 26 Final Reports and Compliance

Final Reports for all Local Boards and Local Recipient Organizations (LROs) are now past due. Please remember that the Phase 26 Final Report must be received before Phase 27 or ARRA funding can be released and that no agency with an outstanding compliance problem from any previous phase of funding can be paid until all compliance issues have been resolved. (Final Reports can be accessed under the Local Board and LRO information section of the web site.)
